This central location, also, enables easy access to other famous
towns and cities of Italy and the beautiful Chianti region of rolling hills,
vineyards and cypress trees.
Lago Trasimeno, the fourth largest lake in Italy, covering an area of 48 square
miles, can easily be explored. On the shores of this lake, Hannibal defeated
the Romans in 217BC; it is now surrounded by numerous interesting towns.
The charming towns of Cortona, Orvieto, Todi, Gubbio, Spoleto,
Montepulciano, Montalcino and Pienza are all within easy driving distance.
The historic cities of Florence, Siena and Rome, the independent state of
San Marino and the Adriatic Coast are all possible destinations for a day
trip.
Local Cities
Arezzo
Arezzo is the nearest city of size. The home of Petrarch and Vasari,
it has a wonderful antique fair on the first Sunday of each month, and a jousting
tournament in September. Arezzo was the location for many of the scenes in
the movie “Life is Beautiful.” There are approximately 50 trains
a day (in each direction) back and forth from Arezzo to Florence
Perugia
The capital city of Umbria, Perugia is based on Etruscan foundations
and has a medieval layout. The historic centre may be explored on foot; travel
up and down the steep hills is made easier by a series of escalators. It is
a university town, which boasts the National Gallery of Umbria. Each July,
the city plays host to Umbria Jazz, Europe’s top jazz festival, with
a variety of indoor and outdoor concerts. The popular annual Euro Chocolate
festival is, also, held here.
